{"id":6822,"date":"2026-04-21T12:30:44","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T16:30:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rqmp.ca\/dominic-ryan\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T12:31:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T16:31:09","slug":"dominic-ryan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rqmp.ca\/en\/dominic-ryan\/","title":{"rendered":"Dominic Ryan"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 fusion-flex-container has-pattern-background has-mask-background hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-padding-top:100px;--awb-padding-right:230px;--awb-padding-bottom:100px;--awb-padding-left:230px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap\" style=\"width:104% !important;max-width:104% !important;margin-left: calc(-4% \/ 2 );margin-right: calc(-4% \/ 2 );\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:20px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"><strong><span style=\"color: #043e61;\">CPM and RQMP are saddened by the passing of our member Dominic Ryan<\/span><\/strong>, who passed away last week after a short battle with cancer.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nDominic first came to McGill as a summer student researcher in 1984 from Trinity College in Dublin, where he was a graduate student working under the esteemed Professor Michael Coey.\u00a0 During that summer at McGill, Dominic worked with Prof. John Strom Olsen on magnetism in amorphous metals.\u00a0 He later joined McGill as a postdoc and subsequently a professor and was known for <strong>expertise in the Mossbauer effect and neutron scattering.<\/strong>\u00a0 Dominic&#8217;s research was very well received by the community, and he has published <strong>more than 300 peer reviewed articles<\/strong>.\u00a0 He mentored <strong>more than 45 research students<\/strong> and enjoyed teaching undergraduates in lab courses.<br \/>\nBesides the work in his own lab, Dominic has also contributed to the community as the vice-president and subsequently the president of the Canadian Institute for Neutron Scattering (CINS), <strong>the director of McGill&#8217;s Centre for Physics of Materials (CPM)<\/strong> and the director of the Physics Department, among other voluntary and assigned roles.\u00a0He was an active faculty member right until his diagnosis in the fall of 2025.\u00a0In his spare time, Dominic was a pilot and owned a small plane he used for both pleasure and work-related travel. <span style=\"color: #043e61;\">May he rest in peace.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-image-element \" style=\"--awb-caption-title-font-family:var(--h2_typography-font-family);--awb-caption-title-font-weight:var(--h2_typography-font-weight);--awb-caption-title-font-style:var(--h2_typography-font-style);--awb-caption-title-size:var(--h2_typography-font-size);--awb-caption-title-transform:var(--h2_typography-text-transform);--awb-caption-title-line-height:var(--h2_typography-line-height);--awb-caption-title-letter-spacing:var(--h2_typography-letter-spacing);\"><span class=\" fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-1 hover-type-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" title=\"Dominic\" src=\"https:\/\/rqmp.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Dominic.jpg\" alt class=\"img-responsive wp-image-1029\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rqmp.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Dominic-66x66.jpg 66w, https:\/\/rqmp.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Dominic.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":1029,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[120],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6822","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-rqmp-news"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
