It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our colleague and member of the RQMP Edward Sacher, associate professor in the department of engineering physics at Polytechnique, at the age of 90, on September 17, 2023.

Ed Sacher was a very active member of the RQMP, a founding member of the Thin Film Science and Technology Group (GCM) of Polytechnique and the University of Montreal, and a researcher in the Department of Engineering Physics until 2010 when he took retired to become an associate professor. Indeed, he was among the first 10 members at the time of the birth of the GCM in 1984. Subsequently, he was the director of the Materials Surface Analysis Laboratory (LASM – Polytechnique). He has contributed significantly to the advancement of expertise in surface and interface analysis, particularly through XPS, TOF-SIMS, AES, photo-acoustic FTIR and others. His research focused, among other things, on the adhesion of metallic layers on polymeric substrates, the fabrication of metallic nanoparticles and their interaction as well as with graphene; this in the context of applications such as magnetic data storage or even in biomedicine. He published articles and helped write grant applications until the end of his life. He will remain in our memory as an excellent researcher, colleague and collaborator.
